School Based Apprenticeships

Senior year students now have the option of working in a part time traineeship or apprenticeship while completing years 11 and 12...
It all counts as part of the HSC, and you get paid too!

School Based Traineeships/ Apprenticeships combine:

* the Higher School Certificate

* Part time paid work

* Structured work place training

* A training program delivered by a Registered Training Organisation, eg School, TAFE, GTO.

You can gain valuable skills, experience, real industry qualifications and earn an income to boot. Sounds too good to be true? Well here is the catch.

Competition for these places is growing, and naturally employers want to take on the best applicants.

To most employers that does not mean the highest academic results, as they often rank qualities such as a real interst in the job, maturity and a positive attitude as key factors.

School Based Apprentices are indentured, and a 3 month probationary period applies. A school based apprenticeship term is a maximum of five years. School based apprentices who have successfully completed the school based component of their apprenticeship will continue their training as a full-time 2nd year apprentice after the HSC.

School based apprentices will spend between100-180 days over 2 years with an employer on site at work. School based apprentices and trainees may work full time during holidays and weekends.

So how do you go about getting involved?

Step 1. Talk to your Career Adviser to see what your school can do to help.

Step 2. Ensure you are job ready with a resume, good school results and great teachers comments and attendance records on your school reports - ready to impress an employer.

Step 3. Investigate the newly funded Trade Training Centres and Trade Colleges across all school systems.
